How to apologise properly

How to apologise properly

1. Take full responsibility

  • Start with “I am sorry that I…”
  • NOT “I am sorry that you…”

2. Offer no excuses

  • Do not say: “I am sorry but…”

This dilutes/ negates our apology.

3. Recognise how your word/ actions may have impacted the other person

  • “I understand now how it would have made you feel hurt/ angry/ upset.”

4. Promise genuine rectification/ change

  • “I will try to be more _ _ _”
  • “I want to make it up to you by…”
  • “How can I fix it?”

A proper apology might sound like:I am sorry for the way I spoke to you last night. I can see why it would upset you. Next time, I will be more careful with my words.”
